Wandering the streets, disoriented and in danger, Richard Ruston, afflicted with paranoid schizophrenia since before his daughter’s birth, often refused treatment throughout her childhood. After years of shame and frustration, his daughter Delaney made the difficult decision as a young adult to cut off contact with him and become “unlisted” .
Ten years later, Delaney - now a doctor and parent herself - feels the strong pull to reconnect with her father. She is able to find Richard, a former English graduate student at Berkeley, doing relatively well on medication. He reads from his novel and reveals sides of himself and their relationship – some she had forgotten and some she never knew. With a new perspective, she begins to understand her father’s world.
But these tense, candid, and sometimes healing interactions are tinged with an echo of fear - that her father might stop his medication again and fall back into psychosis. As both a daughter and a physician, Delaney must struggle with the fragile nature of her personal reunion and her potentially adversarial role as her father’s caretaker.
When events take a turn for the worst, what starts as an emotional tale of reconciliation turns into a frantic search for survival, as the filmmaker’s father goes missing. Unlisted: A Story of Schizophrenia is a gripping tale of a doctor’s attempt to cope with severe mental illness in her own family.
